Check the Power Steering pump for fluid. Other problems can include bad hoses. Even though they look good on the outside they can be bad on the inside restricting the flow of fluid. If changing the hoses didnot work than it is in the steering box.
Check fluid and if it is ok change the hoses.
The trans and power steering have nothing to do with vacuum.
Low power steering fluid or defective power steering pump.
the only thing different would the internals of the trans the turbo trans is a heavy duty trans.

Alternator Belt has snapped, causing you alternator to stop charging causing you battery light to come on, but this belt also runs your power steering pump which if that's not working your steering will become heavy
Your steering suddenly gets very heavy. You have to use a lot of force to turn the steering wheel to make it go where you wand it to.
Your car will still steer but it will feel very heavy.
If the strut is faulty it can cause uneven tyre wear or cause the steering to be either light/heavy and possible rumbling through the driveline.
Probably the rack and pinion needs to be replaced.
