Because Elizabeth was the elder daughter of George VI and Elizabeth (the former Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon). The first-born child of the reigning monarch is the heir apparent. Had Elizabeth been male rather than female, then the UK would have a king. It is usual for the eldest son to inherit the throne (even if there is an older daughter), but when there is no son then the eldest or only daughter inherits.

∙ 10y agoA king is always head of the monarchy. But if i queen should ascend the throne her husband cannot be called king as she has to take the crown . As with our queen now , prince philip can not be called king
