Could be the provision for the rear fog light on right hand drive cars. On left hand drive cars, the rear fog light is on the left side.
Remove the black plastic right beside the fog light using a flathead screw driver or something of the sort. Using a 10mm wrench or socket, remove the screws. Twist light bulb out and replace.
Right when you flick the switch to turn on the light the socket connects and the light will automatically turn on.
To replace the fog light on your 2002 Pathfinder all you do is pop off the black plastic piece that is right beside it. Using a 10mm wrench or socket, remove the screws. Take the whole casing out and twist the bulb out, and replace.
if they are on the trunk lid, there should be carpeted panels on lid that can be removed and that will expose the wiring and light socket for your licence, to remove the socket you will need to turn it a 1/4 turn left or right and it should pop right out.
1. Open the truck and remove tail light compartment cover located at left/right up corners. 2. There will be two light bulbs: the one located on top is the brake light bulb and the lower one is for the backup light. 3. Twist the light socket and pull the light socket out; pull the broken light bulb out of the light socket and plug the new light bulb in (must get a right light bulb from auto parts store) 4. Test the new light bulb and put the compartment cover back on.
Bad bulb socket? Broken Wire to socket?
No. I am assuming that you first replaced the bulb? If you did replace the bulb, then I would check to see if you are getting power to the bulb socket. If no power is getting to the socket, you then need to find the break in the electric lines going to the socket.
From the AutomotiveForums link mentioned below: Remove the plastic corner panel that's inside the trunk covering the back of the light assembly and reach in with your fingers and remove the bulb and socket. From the back it's easy to confuse whether you are removing the brake light, the backup light or the blinker light socket so it would help to have an assistant step on the brakes or turn on the parking lights etc. to make sure you've got the right bulb. Installation is the reverse of removal . . .

The plastic panel the houses the light assembly needs to be removed. The plastic panel is clipped in. To remove it carefully pull it out starting from the left side of the panel at the top and moving down to the right ending on the right. Be careful that the clips don't fall of the plastic panel. You may need to use some strength but it will come off. The light assembly is attached to the rear door. To remove it press down on the top of the red cover. Turn the light socket counter clockwise until you can pull it out. To remove the light bulb pull it out of the socket. It is a 921 18w bulb a very common high mount stop light bulb. The bulb can be purchased at most car parts stores such as Canadian Tire, Napa auto parts or Lordco auto parts. Push the new bulb into the socket. To replace the socket match it up with the lens and turn clockwise to lock in place. Make sure the wires are on the left and the open end of the lens is toward you. Install the assembly back on the door starting with the bottom and snap it back in place. Replace the plastic panel and reclip it by punching it with the side of your fist starting at the left. Punch the entire panel to ensure all clips are reclipped.
If only the right rear brake/signal light is effected it is not the fuse. Inspect the right rear brake/signal bulb, socket and wiring.
In order to replace the 3rd Brake light in a highlander, you need to remove the Plastic Trim from the Back door right on top, and then, you will be able to access the Light bulb socket. The trim snaps back into place once your done. Be careful not to pull the trim to hard when removing from door as the clips could be rendered useless.
