It does not contribute to raising "bad" cholesterol levels like saturated fats do. High "bad" cholesterol levels contribute to Heart disease. There is some evidence that high saturated fat intake is associated with increased rates of cancer as well.

Some types of saturated fat can elevate LDL/ bad cholesterol levels so perhaps some assume the opposite is true.

It helps lower "bad" cholesterol and raise "good cholesterol". Lately there is evidence that unsaturated fats help promote brain and nervous health.
