The oil light will come on when the oil pressure sensor reads that the expected oil pressure is not being reached. This can happen from a few different things: low oil in the engine, dirty/clogged filter, or a faulty sensor.
Either way, it is recommended that you get it looked at immediately so that you dont run the risk of starving the engine or any of its parts of oil.
