It may be a bad new alternator or it was not connected properly. Have the alternator tested to see if it is actually good.

You have a problem with the charging system. More than likely the alternator has failed.
The positive battery terminal cable will always run to the alternator- just follow it down.
The cranking circuit, yes, but not the charging circuit.. the charging circuit is simply your alternator and related items and your belts.

This year Mazda protege does not have a serpentine belt. It has two belts, one for the alternator/water pump, and the other for the power steering and a/c.
if its not charging make sure all your connection are plugged, simple way too test your alt. is start the car remove the pos+ive terminal and see if it still runs if not bad alt. and you will need it replaced. This procedure is not recommended. It can damage a good alternator.
It is probably the alternator that is whining - and not charging so you have run out of battery power and it won't turn over.
