It is easy to learn? And what about 'deutsche Sprache - schwere Sprache'? I think if the questioner never plans to leave America he'd better learn Spanish. Next option for me would be French. In lots of former colonies it is still an official language and therefore in many countries in Africa, some islands and don't forget Quebec. And then I would maybe think of German. I have nothing against my mother tongue but I am glad that I don't have to learn German as a second language.
