They are not more common; there are generally two solar eclipses and two lunar eclipses each year.

The PERCEPTION is that solar eclipses are more rare, and here's why. The Earth is much larger than the Moon, so the Earth's shadow is much larger than the Moon's shadow, right? In fact, the Earth's shadow can cover up the entire Moon at once. But the Moon is smaller than the Earth, and the Moon's shadow is much smaller yet; the diameter of the Moon's shadow is never much more than about 300 miles. The Earth has a diameter of about 8,000 miles, so only a tiny area of the Earth is affected by any solar eclipse.

There are two other points. A lunar eclipse happens on the Moon, and is visible from half of the Earth at once. A solar eclipse is only visible at the point of the Moon's shadow on the Earth, and 75% of the Earth's surface is water. So 3/4 of all solar eclipse time is visible only to people in ships! The last total solar eclipse had a path that went all the way across India and then all the way across China, and millions of people live there. THEN it went most of the way across the Pacific Ocean, and only a few people living on Iwo Jima got to see that part. The next total solar eclipse will be 90% over water, from mid-Pacific to Easter Island to the southern tip of Chile and Venezuela. Hardly anyone will be able to see it.

Think about it.

To observe a solar eclipse safely, you must have clear skies, sunny days, and either a smokey piece of glass or welder's goggles.

To view the sun without protecttion will ruin your eyesight, and so most people will not attempt it again.

However a lunar eclipse can be viewed from anywhere on the dark side of the earth, and so a higher number of people have an opportunity. The solar eclipse passes over a very narrow strip of earth relatively quickly too.

Lunar eclipses can be seen from half the Earth at once, while solar eclipses can be seen from within only a relatively narrow path across the Earth's surface.

So, at any particular place, lunar eclipses are relatively common.

When you consider the Earth as a whole, total solar eclipses actually happen a bit more often than total lunar eclipses.

Is it advised for pregnant ladies not to sleep during lunar eclipse?

This is completely unrelated. There are no known health effects of lunar eclipses, or solar eclipses for that matter, on people - pregnant or otherwise.

Why do partial solar eclipses occur more than total solar eclipses?

There are 4 types of solar eclipse. Total, Hybrid, Annular and Partial eclipses.A Total Eclipse is when the sun totally covers the sun.An Annular Eclipse is when the whole moon is in line with the sun but the apparent diameter of the moon is less than the apparent diameter of the sun.A Hybrid Eclipse is when some places on Earth experience a annular eclipse and other places see a total eclipse.A Partial Eclipse is when the moon is not totally in line with the sun and only eclipses part of the sun.

Why do more people see a total lunar eclipse than a total solar eclipse?

That is probably not true. Lunar eclipses may happen at night, but they last for hours and they are observable by everyone on earth who can see the moon while it is in progress. Solar eclipses cover only small swatches of earth and last only minutes at any one location.

This frequency of solar eclipses is more realistic explain?

There are, in general, two solar eclipses and two lunar eclipses each year. Sometimes the Sun, Moon and Earth don't line up QUITE accurately, and instead of having one total eclipse, we get two partial eclipses a month apart. The lowest possible number of solar eclipses in any calendar year is one; the maximum is five, which would work out to two partial solar eclipses in January, one total eclipse in July, and two partials in December. Both extremes are pretty rare.We _see_ many more lunar eclipses than solar eclipses, even though the numbers are approximately equal. The Moon is a lot smaller than the Earth, and so the Moon's shadow is much smaller yet. A solar eclipse is visible only across a fairly narrow path along the surface of the Earth. Only people along that path can experience the eclipse. The total phase of a solar eclipse never lasts longer than 8 minutes. For a partial eclipse, it is likely that a lot of people won't notice the eclipse at all, because even if half the Sun were blocked, the other half of the Sun would continue to provide plenty of light. It might feel as if a thin cloud layer had dimmed the Sun slightly.A lunar eclipse, on the other hand, happens ON THE MOON, and everybody on the night half of the Earth can see it. Even for a partial eclipse, it's very visible. The Earth is much larger than the Moon, and the Earth's shadow is large enough to completely darken the entire Moon and keep it mostly dark for over an hour.

Is A solar eclipse is more common than a lunar eclipse true?

The two types of eclipses themselves occur in almost identical numbers. During the100 years 1901 - 2000, there were 228 solar eclipses and 229 lunar eclipses. Butin any one place, it's more unusual to see a solar eclipse. The reason for that is:During a solar eclipse, the moon blocks the sun from the view of people who are in justthe right place on the earth. That place is only a few hundred miles wide, and sweepsacross the earth's surface. Even the people in the right places see the effects for onlya short time.During a lunar eclipse, the full moon goes dark. The phenomenon can be seen by anyonewho can see the moon, that is, everyone in any place where it's night at that time.

Why lunar eclipses are more common than solar eclipses and why so few people get the chance to view a total solar eclipse?

Actually solar eclipses are slightly more common, but a solar eclipse, and especially the total phase, can only be seen in a relatively narrow strip of Earth.

What did people think of eclipses?

They thought that wizards are around us when there is an eclipse

How often does an eclipes happen?

There are generally two solar eclipses and two lunar eclipses each year. Sometimes instead of having one total eclipse, we have two partial eclipses a month apart. The minimum number of eclipses in any year is one; the maximum possible would be five. We get the idea that lunar eclipses are more common than solar eclipses, but that's not true. It SEEMS that way, because solar eclipses (when the Moon's shadow hits the Earth) affect a very small path across the Earth's surface, and people outside this path don't generally notice the eclipse. But a lunar eclipse, when the Earth's shadow darkens the Moon, happens ON THE MOON, and is visible from the entire night half of the Earth. So many more people get to see a lunar eclipse, while only a few are in the path of a solar eclipse.

Do solar eclipses occur more than lunar eclipses?

They are about equal in number. The difference is in how many people SEE the eclipse. During a solar eclipse, only people along the path of totality can see the eclipse, and that's a pretty narrow track. For a lunar eclipse, everybody on the night side of the Earth can see it.

Which type of eclipse may be visible to all the people on one side of Earth?

A solar eclipse covers a very narrow path on the Earth, so usually not many people get a chance to see one. It doesn't help that the Earth is 75% water, and some solar eclipses never touch land at all. Lunar eclipses happen on the Moon, not on the Earth, so the entire night-side of the Earth can see it. As for how long the eclipse lasts, solar eclipses last longer because the Earth is bigger than the Moon is. However, the path of totality travels quickly over the Earth, and if you're standing on the Earth watching the eclipse, the eclipse will be over - for YOU - quickly, because the Moon's shadow has moved on. If you could be in a supersonic aircraft keeping up with it, you would be able to see that it actually lasts longer, but from one spot on Earth, a solar eclipse comes and goes VERY quickly.

What type of eclipse was scary to ancient people?

Ancient people were afraid of eclipses because they thought a dragon or other animal was eating the sun. In some cultures, people also believed that an eclipse signaled diseases such as smallpox.

What is a bad eclipse?

Eclipses are neither good nor bad; they happen. They cause no harm to the Earth, nor to the people who live here.
