I would recommend checking the steering u-joint. You can do this by having someone looking under the hood while you turn the wheel and listening to where the sound is coming from. The steering u-joint is located right in front of the driver and it's easy to see ans therefore easy to listen to. Also, have someone spray a shot of WD-40 on the u-joint while you're turning the wheel back and forth. If the squeak stops after spraying it, you've found your problem.
The joints from the factory are sealed and can not be greased. After market replacements may have a zerk and be greaseable. The joints from the factory are sealed and can not be greased. After market replacements may have a zerk and be greaseable.
There is not a good and clear indication on how many ball joints are on a 2000 Ford Mustang. After searching around, there are conclusions that there are at least two ball joints on the Mustang.

check suspension parts for excessive wear: i.e ball joints, tie rod ends, drag link, idler arm, springs, etc.
There is a special tool for removing ball joints. It is a wedged two tine fork that can be hammered into position and pulls the joint out. I guess it hasn't changed, it has been about 20 years since I changed the ball joints on a car. Yes, to avoid damage to the control arms and the mounting holes the ball joints fit in. The good news is that many of the top auto parts stores have these tools to lend or rent.
