- The primary argument in favor of Daylight Saving Time (more popularly known as Summer Time in Europe, Africa and South America) is the reduction in energy costs. Let's say for example that you awaken every day at 7 AM and that the latest sunrise near the winter solstice where you live is just before 7 AM. Let's say also that you live at a latitude where the sun is rising an hour earlier three months after the winter solstice. If you begin DST at that time, the sunrise time jumps to just before 7 AM again, which you don't notice because you sleep until 7. However, because the sunset is also suddenly an hour later according to the clock, you are turning on your lights an hour later every day than you would be without DST.
- A lot of people like having that hour of daylight effectively shifted from before they wake up to the evening so they may enjoy more outdoor activities in the evenings when the weather warms up.
- Many prefer driving home from work or school in daylight rather than in darkness.
- Another popular reason for a country to adopt DST is to stay in sync with a neighboring country with which they do a lot of trade and which observes DST.
The first reason given above is gradually fading away. Around the world, Edison-type incandescent bulbs are being replaced by compact fluorescent lamps (CFLs), and CFLs are being replaced by LED lights, which consume a small fraction of the power consumed by incandescent lights of the same brightness. Meanwhile, in hotter climates closer to the tropics, public opinion regarding air conditioning continues to shift from "luxury" to "necessity", so with most homes using an extra hour of air conditioning in the evenings while their lighting cost savings fade away, DST will likely become a cause of higher energy costs in those warmer climates!
