Early Mormon Pioneers moved to the western U.S. because they had been kicked out of New York, Ohio, Missouri, and Illinois. They chose to live in a place that nobody else wanted so that they could be free of persecution.
Today there are nearly 14 million members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (commonly called the "Mormon" church) worldwide. They are in every U.S. state and nearly every nation of the world.
If the Mormons had a choice, they would have chosen Jackson County, Missouri. However, when they tried to move there they faced extreme persecution and a government extermination order forcing them to leave.
The Mormons never orignally chose isolation, but were forced to accept it because whenever they settled somewhere that other people lived, those people persecuted them and kicked them out. They also never would have chosen their final landing place, Salt Lake City. They ended up there because it was a harsh climate and difficult to access - nobody else wanted to live there, which meant nobody else would be there to persecute them.
The early members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (the "Mormon" church) didn't want to be isolated, they only wanted to be able to practice their religion freely without threat of violence. The Mormons were chased out of towns in New York, Ohio, Missouri, and Illinois. Their homes were burned, property stolen, men were beaten and sometimes killed. They kept moving in hopes that a new town would be more accepting but each time they were persecuted. Eventually they decided the only way to find peace was going to the Rocky Mountains, which was mostly uninhabited at the time. They still did not have peace here, as there were some hostile Native American tribes and the US government sent an Army unit to keep an eye on them, but they were able to live much more peacefully than before.
The Mormons were severely persecuted and kicked out of their previous homes in New York, Ohio, Missouri, and Illinois. They wanted to find a place where nobody lived and where nobody else would want to live so that they could practice their religion in peace without anyone else coming to bother them.
The Mormons are a religion that chose a region that was isolated and very dry. They did this because after facing severe persecution in the east and Midwest, they wanted to settle in a land that was undesirable so that they would be able to practice their religion in peace.
God created the religion and everything that the church has done was because God commanded it
