Oil gets dirty. The filter takes most of the particles out but eventually it builds up in the oil. Conventional oil (non synthetic) does break down after a while and the engine can suffer damage in the long run. It's cheap maintenance to do oil changes. Suggest you do them every 5,000 k or 3 months whichever comes first. Synthetic oil is a good idea if you don't mind spending the money on it but still requires same intervals for changing but can go longer if you have to or tend to forget.
Oil thins out. It gets contaminated with Gasoline. If you use a synthetic oil, these things don;t happen as quickly but they have their own changing schedules.
