Normally in a four course (restaurant service) meal appetizers are served first followed by soup or salad, the main entree, then a dessert.
In a seven course meal the traditional order of service is:
1 appetizer
2 soup
3 fish
4 palate cleanser
5 main entree
6 cold dish (salad or fine vegetable)
7 dessert
Note: formal meals can contain more than 7 courses and often do, adding in poultry, additional palate cleansers, breads, cheeses, fruits, multiple meats(both hot and cold) and a variety of desserts. As well as cocktails, aperatifs, and dessert wines, and brandies. Though these additions are not always considered courses or are added to courses.
when serving soup, you should first ask the guests if they are allergic to any ingredients. then serve the soup and tell them to enjoy

You start with soup first. You don't need to worry as someone will serve you dinner in the right order. When in doubt, look at the order in which the utensils are displayed, from the outside going toward the plate. That will normally give you the necessary clue.

Vichyssoise
Vichyssoise
Soup first, then salad. An exception would be if the soup was the main entree, then the salad would be served first. Then again, if the salad contains meat like chicken, then it's more like a meal and the soup should come first. Bottom line is there is no real right or wrong way. There are places in Rome where they serve the salad last ... after dinner. Yes, after dinner.
