Communism is still a viable form of government amongst certain isolationist religious groups. In the world political realm it is debatable by what you exactly mean.

It may be as early as Stalin or as late as Gorbachev or even Kim il-sung.

The spread of communism ended when the Berlin Wall fell. The United States had made an effort to stop the spread of communism by invading Vietnam. The US invaded because the government suspected that the "Domino Theory" would be successful; this theory said that once one country became communist, all the surrounding countries would as well and eventually the entire world would be communist. The US failed at stopping the spread of communism when they pulled out of Vietnam, but communism ended anyway in 1989-1990 when the Berlin Wall in Germany fell.

Many democratic countries wish to stop the spread of communism because it offers a lack of control of a person's own money, goods, and life. The government has a much larger role in a communistic society than in a democratic society.
