Roger Brook Taney was the Chief Justice of the United States Supreme Court from 1836 to 1864. He's remembered as the author of the majority opinion in Dred Scott vs. Sandford in 1857, sometimes known as the Dredd Scott Decision.
Roger B Taney was a chief justice of the United States supreme court.
And, surprisingly, Taney was a Catholic. In many parts of the US, Catholicism was not liked. In fact the Republican platform in 1858, when Lincoln ran for the senate seat held by Stephen A. Douglas, called the Slavery Conspiracy and Catholicism as the USs main threat to democracy. i
He was the elderly Chief Justice who ruled on the Dred Scott case.
His rejection of this bid for the freedom of the slave in question was stated in terms which delighted the South but greatly offended the Abotionists. It helped to drive the two sides further apart.
He was Chief Justice, and his significance had been before the war in the Dred Scott case (1857), where he refused a slave his freedom on the grounds that the Constitution protected slavery throughout the USA.
This caused a huge controversy, driving the two sides further apart, and helped to bring on the war.
The US Supreme Court in the US Civil War declared that the war began in July of 1861, when US President Lincoln asked Congress for more troops. Earlier he was involved in the Dredd Scott decision of 1857.
The majority decision in which Chief Justice Taney wrote on the Court's decision stated that:* Blacks could never be US citizens because they were Africans;
* Dredd Scott could not sue in a US court because he was not a citizen;
* Blacks, because they were not citizens could not serve in public office or sit on a jury; and
* Congress could not make any laws on slavery because slaves were people in captivity and under the US Constitution, therefore Congress could not regulate slavery.
Scott remained a slave. This was in 1857.
He was important because the US Supreme Court ruled in 1862, the officially the US Civil War did not begin when Fort Sumter was attacked in April of 1861. The Court ruled that the was was official in July of 1861, when US President Lincoln addressed Congress and asked for more troops.
He made the Dred Scott decision which was unjust because it was his right. He worked in the supreme court which is the highest court.
