Echo was punished by Hera because she was a nymph who helped Zeus cheat on Hera. Echo did this by distracting Hera and flattering her. When Hera found out, she cursed Echo to repeat the words of others.
Echo used to help Zeus get away with his affairs by keeping Hera busy with her continuous talking, so that Zeus and the nymphs he was with would have time to escape. When Hera found out about it she cursed her.

Well, Zeus would often play with nymphs and echo would always talk to Hera until Zeus left. One day Hera found out and cursed echo that she could never speak, only repeat the last word of what others said. One day Narcissus came and Echo fell deeply in love with him. He was UNBELIEVABLY rude when he said he wasn't interested. She was so upset, she went into a cave and drank no water and ate no food. Eventually, all that was left was her voice, repeating every word you said when you spoke into a cave.

Echo's sin was being a gossip, which is someone who repeats what they've heard about other people. So Hera made it such that she could ONLY repeat what other people say. That seems particularly appropriate.
