To answer that question we must go back to the French and Indian War when George Washington had a small commission, but because of many mistakes he did not get a permanent commission which did not make him happy, he did not involve himself in any military action or conflict until 1775. His small commission was commander of the Virginia Infantry Regiment. Washington was new to military, but showed himself as a excellent commander with extensive knowledge in leadership, training, and tactics. Washington showed himself as a very courageous commander when he rode back and forth on the disastrous Braddock expedition at the Battle of Monongahela to rally British Troops to a "organized retreat". During the Second Continental Congress he wore a military uniform which showed he was ready for war. Nominated by John Adams of Massachusetts, who went on to become the First Vice President and the Second President, as the choice of the Commander and Chief of the Continental Army. Washington become the commander, making John Hancock of Massachusetts unhappy.
