Jerusalem was important to the Byzantine peoples throughout its long history (from the 4th century AD/CE until 1453) for the same reason that it was important to any Christian society: it was the scene of the crucifixion and resurrection of Jesus Christ, the seminal figure in Christianity. Along with Jerusalem, of course, numerous other sites in the Middle East and elsewhere were valued by Byzantine Christians for faith-related reasons.

In 602 Khosrau II did not know he was going to seize Jerusalem. In 613 he came to lead a Persian-Jewish army due to a Jewish insurrection against the Byzantines across the Levant which begun during the Battle of Antioch in that year. These Jews joined the Persian forces. The Jewish revolt culminated with the conquest of Jerusalem in 614 by Persian and Jewish forces and the establishment of Jewish autonomy.
