Malta was an island in the Mediterranean Sea that was held by the British. From this island, the British could strike Italy and disrupt the shipping lanes that was re-supplying the Axis troops fighting in North Africa. Malta was heavily bombed by Italian air force but the island never capitulated.

∙ 15y agoThe reason that Britain and her allies fought with such dedication for Malta is that it gave her mastery of the Mediterannean Sea and prevented Germany and Italy from cutting off supplies from Britain to her forces in North Africa. This was the main staging post for the later invasion of Italy by British, Australian and American forces later in the war. Alan Mordue Patristix
