Tecumseh was raised to resist the white invaders. He excelled as a warrior and refused to attend a treaty conference, causing a break from the shawnee tribe. He and his militant followers - many who were not shawnee - moved to western Ohio. In the next decade he not only became a great leader but was known by everyone, including the whites, for his eloquence and intelligence. Before his death, he urged tribes to band together, unified, to fight the greater enemy, the white invaders.
