Branding is not necessary but the purpose of it is. Branding is just another form of identification, it is commonly used in Western Canada, whereas farmers in Ontario usually use ear tags only. The branding is only to quickly identify what farm the animal came from but it has only this information alone. It is now law in Ontario that every animal leaving the farm of origin have a tag bearing a unique identification number placed in the ear.
