Slavery was a globally accepted state at the time it was established in the Americas. It was a 'normal' way of life for the last 5000 years (The Bible mentions it - the Hebrew slaves in Egypt). Also remember the slaves brought to America were enslaved by people in Africa, they were purchased as slaves by the slave traders.

It is only very recently that humanity has recognised that it is not a thing one human being should do to another.
