Many historians consider the series of battles in the American Revolution at Saratoga New York to be a major turning point in the American's bid for independence. The last battle there was a major British defeat and the king of France then decided to make a formal alliance with the Americans in their bid for freedom. France and England had been enemies many times. France sought to weaken British power in the Western Hemisphere by helping the Americans.
