The Kingdom of Scotland and the Kingdom of England (which included Wales) had been under the same monarchy for a while. Both kingdoms had alot in common and became th eKingdom of Great Britain in 1707. In 1707, the parliaments of England and Scotland united to form a single ruling body called the Parliament of Great Britain, which also ruled Wales and Ireland.

This is when the United Kingdom of Great Britain was created, having one unified government. However the two main constituent kingdoms, England and Scotland had been ruled by the same monarch since 1603, when James VI of Scotland became also James I of England.
