The Battle of Yorktown was the last major battle of the American Revolutionary War. It was basically because British General Cornwallis, believed that in order to have control over the Carolina's, he would have to take control of Virginia.

Cornwallis eventually settled his troops within the region of the Chesapeake Bay. General George Washington, ordered that Cornwallis and his troops be blockaded. From this, Cornwallis and his troops were trapped.

On October 19, 1781, Cornwallis surrendered his army of about 7,000 soldiers. The British band piped a tune called "The World Turned Upside Down." The fighting was over.

In the American war for independence at the battle of Yorktown, Lafayette's American Army pinned down the British Army led by Lord Cornwallace. The French Fleet arrived and kept the British from escaping by sea. Lafayette could have conquered the British Army then and there but he realized that if Washington won the battle, it would give Europe much greater respect for the United States. As a result Lafayette sent word for Washington to bring his army to Yorktown.

Washington marched his army from New York to Yorktown, Virginia. When he arrived Washington began siege tactics. Lord Cornwallace, one of England's best generals, surrendered his army to General Washington.

Lafayette was correct. Washington's victory at Yorktown created great respect for the United States in Europe.
