When was Archduke Franz Ferdinand assassinated?

Austrian Archduke Franz Ferdinand and his pregnant wife, Sophie, were assassinated in Sarajevo (then Hungary, part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire) on June 28, 1914, leading to the start of WWI.Gavrilo Princip, a member of a politicized group of Bosnian Serbs, The Black Hand, shot the Archduke with the intention of breaking Austria-Hungary's control over southern provinces so they could be merged with a portion of Yugoslavia and become a self-governing entity.

What country was Archduke Francis Ferdinand the Archduke of?

Ferdinand was Archduke of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, sometimes called the Hapsburg Empire (after the ruling family) or the "Dual Monarchy" (Austria AND Hungary). The Hapsburgs and their empire had been around for centuries, and controlled most of southeastern Europe. Besides the Austrians and Hungarians, there were dozens of other ethnic groups in this polyglot Empire, and dozens of languages spoken. The murder of Ferdinand was especially galling to the old Emperor, because he had been on the throne sixty years and knew he was going to die soon (he made it another two years). Ferdinand was heir to the throne, and groomed to take over. Ferdinand was in this position because the old Emperor's son had committed suicide around 1880, over not being allowed to marry the woman he loved, a commoner (there's a pretty good old black and white movie about this son and heir called "Mayerling"). So the old Emperor, Franz Joseph, had lost his only son and the original heir, and now he was deprived of his nephew, who was ready to take over. Incidentally, Ferdinand was killed because he showed signs of being a reformer. The Serbs were afraid that Ferdinand, once in power, would make so many accommodations to the ethnic Serbs in his Empire they would lose their nationalistic thirst to get out of the Austro-Hungarian Empire and be united with Serbia.

How long did franz Ferdinand reign?

Franz Ferdinand never reigned. His father's brother, Franz Joseph, was the Emperor for sixty-eight years. The Emperor's only son, the cousin of Franz Ferdinand, committed suicide when the Emperor refused him permission to marry the girl he loved (see the movie "Mayerling"). With that suicide the old Emperor had no heir, and tried to make his brother, Franz Ferdinand's father, the heir to the throne, but the brother did not want it. So that left Franz Ferdinand to be the heir to the throne when his old uncle might die, but he just lived on and on and on. Franz Ferdinand was heir for more than fifteen years, but when he was murdered his uncle was still alive. The old Emperor outlived Franz Ferdinand by two years, dying in 1916.

Why was the assassination of Franz Ferdinand not important?

It was an important event as it was the casus belli of the First World War. So, I would never consider it as unimportant. Imperialism, alliances, nationalism and militarism had led the European powers on the brink of a war, and in this relation we say that the assassination of the heir of Austria-Hungary (Franz Ferdinand and his wife) was not the real cause of the war.

Why was the assassination of Archducke Franz Ferdinand an immediate cause for war?

Leaders were already boiling for a fight, so they just used his death as an excuse to attack each other.

The Archduke Franz Ferdinand was the heir to the Austrian throne and his death started World War I. He was killed by Serbians who did not want to be part of the Austrian empire. Russia said that they would help protect their Serbian brothers. So all these nationalist feelings led to the war.

Name Franz Ferdinand's body guards?

Who is more important Franz Ferdinand's death or World War 1?

The two go hand in hand, the assassination was the short term cause of the war. When you look at the war as a whole there were numerous long term causes such as the militarism, building alliances and imperialism of the major European powers of the time. So the was waiting to happen and the assassination of Franz Ferdinand was just the spark that ignited the fire, the war probably would have happened without the assassination but the assassination would not be as well known had it not started the war.

What Franz Ferdinand band song is about the actual death of archduke Ferdinand?

They do have a song that somehow tackles the assassination, and its title is "All For You Sophia", which is a B-side to their hit single, Take Me Out. It does not completely retell the whole story, it in fact, employs reiteration. It, however, makes mention of the important people and places, like Sophia (the Archduke's wife is actually Sofie, but the band decided to lengthen the name so that it would sound better), Gavrilo Princip, their "chauffeur" Franz Urban, and Appel Quay. :)

What was first used as a weapon in world war 1?

The first weapon was a grenade aimed at the Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria in Sarajevo, Bosnia. It did miss so another man shot him to death. This caused a crisis which begun WW1.
