The Trail of Tears was called that because entire tribes were taken from their native lands and homes in the southeastern US to other places in the west--many died on the way.
The law being enforced was the Indian Removal Act of 1830.
The trail of tears
One of the largest forced walks was the Cherokee nation from Florida to Oklahoma. This is called the Trail of Tears because of the loss of life and the crudity involved in forcing 4,000 men, women, and children to walk to the reservation in Oklahoma. Many other tribes were forced onto reservations all over the United States. Many of these still exist with Native Americans living on them.
The Trail of Tears was a forced march in the dead of winter from Georgia to Oklahoma of 4,000 Native Americans from infants to elderly. People died on this walk from illness, starvation, and the conditions they encountered. This is one of the most shameful events in American history.
Not sure what you mean by the "walking purchase." Several Native American tribes were walked from Georgia to Oklahoma to a reservation. Many died on the forced march. It is called the Trail of Tears.
The movement West, and thus the Great Plains, by American settlers was an ongoing disaster for Native Americans. Actually, even before the US Civil War, Native Tribes in the East, such as the Cheyennes forced march to Oklahoma, Later, due to the transcontinental railway that connected both the East & West coasts, more settlers were able to move west into Native lands. Also, the discovery of gold & silver brought even more Americans west. Treaties by the US government with many Native American nations eventually were broken and forced relocations of Natives into government reservations caused much conflict. The end result was the reduction of the American Tribes, and for the most part, their separation from mainstream America. The conflicts were deadly and ongoing for decades.

It was a march in which the United States Government forced Native Americans to relocate approximately 1500 miles from their homes. Approximately 1/3 of the Native Americans on the march died due to the elements and lack of food and water. Native American tribes that moved later settled in Oklahoma, Texas and other western states. Why were these Native Americans relocated? Why at this time in history? What were their options if they did not want to move? Was this a federal mandated relocation? How did the idea of relocating these people originate? Who opposed this? What were the advantages and disadvantages for the Native Americans who made this move? An unbiased research project should answer these questions and initiate additional questions.
