The middle east is of interest for a number of reasons. It exports a lot of petroleum. Three of the worlds great religions, Judaism, Christianity, and Islam, consider the middle east to be an especially holy region (one section is often referred to as "The Holy Land" and that is the most hotly contested territory on Earth). And, the middle east is the primary source of global terrorism. The September 11th terrorists originated in the middle east (specifically, they were Egyptians based in Afghanistan).
There are a vast number of holy cities in the Middle East. The most famous are, listed by country. Israel/Palestine: Jerusalem, Bethlehem, Nazareth, Hebron, Nablus/Shchem Saudi Arabia: Mecca, Medina Iraq: An-Najaf, Karbala, Kufa Syria: Damascus
They were called crusades. There were a number of crusades to the Holy Land, but there were others, such as the Northern Crusades against pagans of the Baltic region, and the Albigensian Crusade against French heretics.
The Holy Roman Empire was also called Germany. Strictly speaking the two were not identical, as medieval people used the name Germany to mean places where German was spoken; some of these were not in the Holy Roman Empire and some parts of the Holy Roman Empire were not German speaking.

The British also created and armed Arab and Jewish Militias to assist them in their attacks against the Ottomans.
