Where Britain partitioned India, they broke off the heavily Muslim areas and called them East and West Pakistan. Unfortunately, other than being Muslim, the two regions didn't have much in common and the political power was in the larger area. As all too frequently happens when governmental units are far apart, the one that's closer to the seat of goverment tends to oppress the distant one. This happened and eventually East Pakistan broke away to become Bangla Desh (or Bangladesh) while West Pakistan simply became Pakistan.
Bangladesh was formerly known as "East Pakistan" after the partition of British India. Pakistan was "West Pakistan". "East Pakistan" seceded from "West Pakistan" in 1971 after a short but vicious civil war, aided by India.
East Pakistanis increasingly felt that the region was treated mostly as a colony of West Pakistan.
ÊAgha Mohammed Yahya was the President of Pakistan and he started the civil war that led to the separation of East Pakistan into the state of Bangledesh.
In August 1947, the countries of Pakistan and India were formed by the Partition of India that effectively dissolved the British Indian Empire. The country of Pakistan was characterized by two culturally and geographically separate areas popularly called West Pakistan and East Bengal (later East Pakistan). Although East Pakistan had a slightly larger population, all political power was centered in West Pakistan and it was commonly thought that East Pakistan was being financially exploited. On March 25, 1971, West Pakistan came down violently on growing political unrest and Bengal nationalism in East Pakistan ,which in turn caused East Pakistan to declare its independence and become the state of Bangladesh. Civil war ensued the following day and came to be officially known as the Bangladesh Liberation War.
After elections which took place in 1971, Sheikh Mujeeb of East Pakistan gained majority but in West Pakistan Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto was chosen by public. Bhutto didn't accept victory of Mujeeb. This conflict resulted in riots and ultimately army intervention was made by Pakistan in East Pakistan. India took advantage of this situation and attacked Pakistani borders. This whole scenario resulted in separation of East Pakistan from West Pakistan.
