Indentured servants, or people who work for an amount of years for a bit of land, money, and clothes at the end of those years, came from England in the Great Migration and were more civilized and humane. Look up indentured servants!

∙ 9y agoThe collapse of slavery in New England was much different than it was in the middle states. For New England, their economy did not depend on slave labor, so it was not a disaster economically. Meanwhile, many of the middle states did depend on slave labor. So abolition lead to serious economic problems.

∙ 9y agoThe southern colonies had more fertile soil than the New England colonies, making farming particularly lucrative for them. New England had nothing that would become a cash crop that could be sustainable all year. As a result, large numbers of slaves were not be cost efficient in the northern colonies.
