Tobacco was extremely important to Jamestown because it sold the best profit. It was very popular, and when England bought it from the colonies for a low price, England then sold it to the rest of Europe for an even higher price, making it the wealthiest country back then. But it also wasn't fair because the colonies were being cheated in a way from their mother country who sold the crop that they discovered for a really high price in Europe. So they weren't making enough money because of England! Sorry off topic, so tobacco made their mother country rich, rich, rich....:)
