Speaking in terms of ancient history, people were made slaves because they were a source of inexpensive labor. They were also used as Roman gladiator games and as tutors to wealthy Romans. Moving from ancient history towards the 19th Century, people were made slaves for the same reason, cheap labor.

What I think about people being enslaved in Louisiana is that it was horrible for Slaves that worked in Louisiana because they had to work and they were not paid. It was a good way for the captors to make money. The planters of Louisiana are greatly exercised concerning the continual escapes of their slaves and have held an important meeting at New Orleans about the labor question. After much angry talk and a good deal of abuse of the Government, of which they are "registered enemies," they seem to have agreed at last to pay their slaves wages. That's a sentence where they talked about how slaves were being paid wages Most masters were not good people they enslaved people. Even though Slaves got paid they did not get to live a good life as other people got too. I know slavery was bad because It's not right for people to be enslaved and slaves were crucially beaten and they were not treated right.
In Africa, some blacks did, and do in the present day, own slaves. In the United States of America I doubt if any black people held other black people as slaves.
Europeans held all types of slaves, from Asians to Muslims to even Europeans themselves. The most known, however, are the African slaves which lasted up until the 1800s in some parts of the Western world. Africans have held other Africans as slaves, even up until today. Muslims are another group of people who had slaves, too typically African. The Chinese are yet another group who held slaves. Most of these slaves were Slavs from Eastern Europe. In fact, this is where the etymology of Slav comes from (slave). Virtually every group of people have had slaves. Most of the time, due to war.
Once the slaves were freed by the emancipation proclamation, people had still thought they were inferior because they were originally slaves. Being that people didn't want to be held on the same level as slaves, they had separated themselves from them and thus, segregation.
north
The British had a large part in slavery in that the many of the British people were purchasers of slaves. They also held slaves and farmed with slave labor.

Most slaves in the North American continent came from Africa but not all. Some were Chinese, and some Native Americans held slaves at the time that Abraham Lincoln freed all the slaves with the Emancipation Proclamation, these people too were free.

The emancipation was when Abraham Lincoln said all slaves held by southerners were free to go. It did not make them citizens, nor did it let slaves held by northerners go.
