In ancient Rome slaves were freed for a variety of reasons. For one, he may have saved up enough money from his tips and perhaps illegal gambling to buy his freedom. He could be voluntarily freed by his master. Many masters freed their slaves in their wills. His master might feel that a slave could be of more use to him as a freedman than as a slave. Sometimes masters, who where under suspicion for a serious crime, would free their slaves so they could not be tortured into giving testimony against him. (In ancient Rome a slave could be tortured, but not a free man). Or a master could simply be good friends with his slave and give him his freedom. The only restriction to freeing someone was that the slave had to be thirty years of age before he/she could be manumitted.
