In the period after about 1825 tourism became increasingly popular among sections of the middle classes. Previously, travel for recreations and pleasure had been something mainly for aristocrats. The first recognizably modern guidebooks (with practical advice on accommodation, restaurants and so on) started to appear in the late 1820s and the 1830s. Obviously, the construction of railways made travel easier, quicker and cheaper.
