In fact, protests against Japan in China were sustained all the years, not only in 2005. Anti-Japanese emotions are quite common in China these years. The reasons why protests even demonstrations took place were three :1, The former Prime Minister of Japan, Koizumi Junichiro, continually visited Yasukuni Shrine, where 1068 people convicted of war crimes by a post World War II court and 12 convicted and 2 suspected Class A war criminals("crime against peace"), including Hideki Tojo, are enshrined. The visit of the leader to the shrine almost means they've never recognized the crimes committed by Empire of Japan. What the Prime Minister did aroused great protests in East Asian countries. 2. The newly-published textbooks of Japan erased the Nanking Massacre and almost all the atrocities commited by Japanese Army during WWII and whitewashed the war launched by Japan as a war of liberation and civilization of Asian people. 3. The government of Japan denied compensation for the comfort women who were forced to be sex slaves for Japanese Army during WWII.
The former chancelor of Germany, Willy Brandt even knelt down at the monument to victims of Warsaw Ghetto Uprising. What the prime minister of Japan did were just contrary. The attitudes toward wars of the two countries are too different. It's absolutely sure that Europeans can't tolerate Hitler's being respected in Germany. So the same way the visit meant in China and other East Asian countries.
There are also some additional reasons: 1.The belonging of some controversial territories(some islands north of Taiwan ). 2. The standpoint of Japanese government towards the issues of the Independence of Taiwan. ( Notice that the Joint Communiqué of the Government of Japan and the Government of the People's Republic of China had declared the PROC as the only legitimate government in China)
