The countries in Europe (mainly England, Spain, and France) were seeking new ways of transporting spices, which were abundant in India and Asia. It was too costly and dangerous to haul large amounts of goods across the deserts of the Middle East, so they were trying to find a sea rout. When explorers first reached North America, they thought they had reached India, and wrongly began calling the native people Indians.
