When the North American continent was discovered (first by Christoper Columbus and then by other European explorers), countries in Western Europe were looking for a quick rout to the country of India, which was the gateway to Asia. The countries in Europe (mainly England, Spain, and France) were seeking new ways of transporting spices, which were abundant in India and Asia. It was too costly and dangerous to haul large amounts of goods across the deserts of the Middle East, so they were trying to find a sea rout. When explorers first reached North America, they thought they had reached India, and wrongly began calling the native people Indians.

No, Native Americans are from tribes like the Cherokees and other tribes. They originated in America. Indians are from the country India, and are a whole other group of people from the Native Americans. The reason why Native Americans are sometimes referred to as Indians is because, when Christopher Columbus was sailing to India, he accidentally ended up in North America where he called all the Native Americans, Indians.
