In France, the Holy Roman Empire, and some other countries, women could not be monarchs.

In the middle ages, women only inherited large estates or titles in their own rights if they had no brothers. A result was that there were far fewer female monarchs, even in the countries where they could be monarchs.

The educations of women were more likely to be rudimentary than those of men.

Not many women went off to fight in wars.

These factors reduced the likelihood that women become famous enormously. Nevertheless, there were some pretty interesting women in the middle ages, and anyone interested in them could check out the following (there are links below):

  • Ethelfleda of Mercia, who kicked around the Vikings pretty badly
  • Anna Comnena, who was the premiere historian of her time
  • Eleanor of Aquitaine, who lead a company of women warriors to crusade and married kings of France and England
  • Hildegard of Bingen, a nun who corresponded with Emperors, wrote books on herbology, and wrote poetry and plays, one of which is set to her original music she wrote down.
  • Marie de France, who was a great poet, of whom we know nearly nothing
  • Margaret I of Denmark, who was asked to rule, despite the fact that Danish law forbade female monarchs, because the nobility respected her so much. When an army came to dethrone her, she destroyed it. She united Denmark with Sweden and Norway and Iceland, creating a nice little empire called the Kalmar Union.
  • Joan of Arc, a peasant girl who took over the French army when she was seventeen, at a point when France was about to lose the Hundred Years War, and in two years turned the tide of the war.

This is a highly debatable topic, however most say that women were believed to be the lesser sex because a.) almost all of us we not educated at that time, therefore we were considered stupid. b.)women are naturally more in touch with their emotions, so that led to them not being capable of having a rational decision because our personal feeling clouded our judgement. In this time period, most, women also weren't as concerned with the things modern day women are women took naps in the middle of the day while the men discussed topics not suitable for the women over cigars. Women were suppose to be silent beauties. As opposed to today's (still beautiful) but more outspoken women. So yes we were considered the lesser sex, but it was not all a mans doing, we had different priorities.

hope this helps:)
