Why when I am driving my car stopped at a street light the car turns off but it is still on Basically the needle was pointing at off but the engine was still on?

Many modern cards actually stop the engine if the car is stationary and restart it as you move to pull away. This saves fuel and reduces pollution.

With the distributor cap off have some one turn the engine over. If the rotor doesn't turn you broke the cam or a timing gear.
