the reason is that there is a switch at the bottom of the spring by the clutch that is a safety switch so you don't start the car up in gear. either the master cylinder is leaking and by pumping it tells the switch that it is not in gear or the switch is bad and youre just hitting it and knocking the bad connections back to their senses, or you have a bad cable that has stretched past it life . try having someone push down on the switch or hit the switch while you try to start it. if the fluid is too low it will not start or the car will start and while you are driving it will lock up and not shift because of low pressure in the master cylinder for the clutch because of a bad master clutch cylinder. there is an adjustment for the spring cable when you push in the clutch. your clutch or cable is at its life end.

Why does a car start but when in gear not move?

The parking brake is on or the transmission (automatic) or the clutch (standard) has problems.

Is there any other way of turning on a standard car?

You can push start a car with a standard transmission. Place the car in neutral. Push the car to a brisk speed. Mash down the clutch pedal and place the gear selector in 2nd gear. Pop the clutch, and it should start.

How do I Start a standard car?

Safest way: Set Parking brake Push clutch pedal to the floor Shift to neutral Turn key to start

How do you start a car without the starter?

If it's a standard shift transmission you can "pop" start it by rolling down an incline, push the clutch in, put the trans in 2nd or 3rd gear, turn the ignition on, release the clutch and away you go. If it's an automatic, you're screwed.

I wonder why my 1998 Rodeo wont start when I push in the clutch and try to start it?

I was recently having the same problem, it was a camshaft sensor that cut it off, of course mine is a 99 tho, and it seems lately Im replacing everything on it. But i love it and will continue to do so.. lol

What is wrong when pushing the clutch it is hard to engaged and when trying to shift it to start going it won't shift?

to start with when you push in on the clutch pedal you are disengaging it. Your description sounds like the clutch has clutched its last clutch What if it is not the clutch?

What is the main function if an ignition safety switch?

To not allow the engine to start unless the shift is in park or neutral in an automatic or the clutch is depressed in a standard transmission.

If its standard then more than likely its the clutch.

Does your Harley have to be in neutral to start?

No. My 2002 Softail (Deuce) will start in gear, clutch in or clutch out, if the ignition is turned on.

You have changed the clutch on your 95 escort and you still have to pop the clutch to start it?

The problem may be with your starter and not with the clutch.
