Why would 1996 Geo Prism start and run fine only when gas peddle is depressed but not when peddle is untouched and then stop when you take foot off the gas?

If your car has an idle air control valve that is clogged up with carbon it will generally run with the throttle opened up and stall if it is let off. If you have one try to locate it and sometimes you can tap it with a wrench or something to break some carbon loose, that would be a very temporary fix, but it would verify that is the problem.
