ours was making a teerrible knocking noise like it was low on oil. also the check engine light was stuck on. had a shop replace some gaskets (upper manifold maybe?) and noise is gone.
sounds like universal jounts going bad ,but may be driveshaft bolts Check the u joints before you drive it again!
Check the linkage between the shifter and the transfer case. If its ok, go in reverse for about half a block and then try to engage it. If that doesn't work, maybe you have a vacuum leak somewhere.
If your vehicle is a rear-wheel drive, u-joints on either end of driveline may need replacing.

Sounds like a bad muffler bearing to me .......
that sounds like your transsion you should have it looked at although you can drive it with out reverse for quite a while
it's a ford ,scared to be found on road dead, or if that is an alwheel drive van make sure all your tires are the same size.
