When the engine is turned off all of the oil is draining out of the oil lines. It takes a couple seconds for the oil to get pumped back into the lines before the pressure builds up. You might try a slightly heavier weight oil and see if it helps. Thanks Redbeard I changed the oil and used 20-50,didn't make a difference. It still takes about 5 to 20 seconds(depending on how long the car has been standing) for the oil pressure to come up plus the engine sounds really bad now, lots of knocking, clicking, whining, etc,I'm not even sure where it comes from. Do I have to replace the crankshaft/bearings? What's involved in that?Would it be better to get a new, used engine. I could get one for $375. Please give me some ideas what to do,this is bothering me badly.
The carburetor needs to be removed, disassembled, cleaned, reassembled and replaced. If any gaskets tear in the process you will need a rebuild kit.
If your pump is out you should not run the engine as this will ruin it very quickly. If you have an oil pressure guage and you have less than 10 psi of oil pressure you have a problem. My 94 Chevy G20 van with a 5.7L had low oil pressure until I replaced the intake manifold gaskets, during which I cleaned the "gunk" between the cylinder banks. I also replaced the oil pressure sensor sensor which I broke while removing the manifold (oops). Now the engine has good oil pressure at all rpm's. Not sure which was the issue.
Possible cracked block or a blown head gaskets.
you may need to replace your gaskets on your valve covers and such, the gaskets are vital to engine pressure
I replaced my intake gaskets on my Malibu 3.1, and I did not disturb power steering!! a lot of people have had problems after changing gaskets , but mine runs good!! I did a flush to coolant system, and changed thermostat, it is easier to change thermostat when tore down.
I was not aware that headgaskets were repairable. I have always replaced them with new gaskets. If you mean who replaces headgaskets, then that would be an engine mechanic.
I had the same problem with my olds, when I took it to the mechanic, he replaced my o-rings and gaskets and cleaned the base, and it fixed the problem, it only cost like 150$ from my mechanic so it might be your best bet to have someone look at it...
i had to have my gaskets replaced ... ive heard the 3100 are known for being made with plastics gaskets ... idk
Probably a gasket or seal. Could be the rocker cover gaskets, intake manifold gaskets, or end rail seals. Have even seen the oil pressure sender leak and spray up onto the manifold. Get everything cleaned up real good and you'll be able to see where it's coming from.
Head gaskets can't be repaired. If they fail they have to be replaced.
have you had the head gaskets replaced you might have blown head gaskets or warped heads on the block this is a costly repair check your water for oil or check your oil for water this will help to determin if they are ... have you had the head gaskets replaced you might have blown head gaskets or warped heads on the block this is a costly repair check your water for oil or check your oil for water this will help to determin if they are ...
I have always cleaned and re-used the bolts. But DO replace the gasket if there is one, don't re-use old gaskets.
