That lets him know that he has or had enough power to really hurt you. It probably makes him proud to know that he controlled that and made the wound stick. The worst thing to him would be for you to live well and treat yourself well for the rest of your life. You just told him what he wanted to hear. He is abusive and abusers want their victims to feel bad. If they don't feel bad, then the abuser failed.
