The vehicle will not let you go into gear if your tail lights are inoperative (this can be bypassed, but then you are driving without tail lights, so don't). Additionally, some impacts, or even a sever jolt from a pothole can set off the inertia switch which cuts off the fuel flow. It can be reset easily by pushing the red button down.
