Water pump going bad, belt not tight on waterpump. when you accelerate it spins faster and pushes more water. Have you filled the radiator with the car running? That is the only way to be sure there is enough coolant to keep the heater filled.
Another thought is a partially plugged heater core. The higher rpm's could provide a bit of extra flow through the constricted core passages (??).

I'm pretty sure its the green like alot of older cars. but to be safe get the MULTI use antifreeze.
