Why would your 95 mercury van overheat while in traffic or sitting still but not while you drive it you changed the thermostat and the water pump already?

it may be because your fan is not pulling as much air as your engine needs.also the ac puts extra strain on your engine making it work harder.you may also have air in the cooling system creating hot spots in your engine.
ignition timing can also cause a vehicle to overheat.

You most definately unpluged the sensor wire. It's a single red wired that plugs onto a sensor just passed the thermostat.
