Does your car have overdrive? Does it stall when going uphill? If you answered yes to these it is possible that your transmission kick down isn't working. The kickdown basically detects when the car becomes under load and shifts the transmission down a gear.

Why would cause your 1996 Eclipse GST Turbo to run hot after 12 miles of driving?

Check the operation of the cooling fans. However, if you are driving at highway speeds the cooling fan would not be needed, therefore it could be a defective thermostat or a clogged radiator, in which case a radiator shop could clean and refurbish it. If not driving at highway speeds, the check not only the fan, but the thermostatic switch controlling the fan and the fuse/circuit breaker for the fan system

Which uses more gas driving on the highway or city?

You get farther on a gallon of gas when driving on the highway, than when you drive in the city. This is because in the city you have more stop and go situations that are wasteful. The solid proof that is the irrefutable EPA sticker on all gasoline only or diesel only cars sold. Take careful note to see that the miles you get on a gallon of gas or diesel is less for city driving than it is for highway driving. Further, if you use more gas to get around town then you also cause more pollution. Specifically, you use less gas and less pollution if you do all of your shopping at one location, like a nearby mall, than driving all around town to many different stores.

Will a bad compressor cause a car to quit running while driving?

A seized AC compressor will tear up the belt... if it's a serpentine belt, or a belt which runs any other components necessary to the car's operation, that'll eventually cause it to shut down.
