AnswerThe number 1 cylinder on a sbc is always front on drivers side, on dist. cap looking from the front of the car is it at 5 o'clock.
standing on the passengers side of the car and looking at the dist. it is the bottom right. From there you wire the the cap clockwise
first, remove the coil wire from distributor, but not the coil. Pull # 1 plug, (drivers side front of engine) and roll over engine. feel for the air blowing out of cylinder. (it will push your finger off the hole. Look at the timing tab on the timing cover and roll engine over to 0 deg. on tab. This is TDC or top dead center of #1 cylinder. Remove dist. cap and see what post on the dist. cap the metal pin on the rotor points to. (generally points toward #1 cylinder, but not always.) (rotor being the top part under the dist. cap) then figure out the firing order in a CLOCKWISE rotation around the cap.
