I don't believe that books or printed materials will ever become completely obsolete. Although technology is a great thing and will continue to improve, it will always have flaws and bugs and of course will always need electricity. It might gather dust for a while, but eventually be needed again. Printer companies would take a big hit too.
Food for though:
What were to happen if paper was obsolete and an EMP went off? Everything is fried, what are people going to use to troubleshoot and repair your PC? Oh crap...I threw my manual in the trash.
The harmful effects of materials that are invented by technology are materials that are not biodegradable. This is because the materials are synthetic materials and cause destruction to the environment.
