The 3100 SFI engines were rated to 160HP, like the 3300 engines were. The 3.1 MultiPort FI were rated at 140HP. Of course, you certainly can swap a 3.1 MPFI engine in your Century, and in my opinion, you would do a very good choice. If a 3.1 MPFI can work in a Chevrolet Cavalier, why wouldn't it work in a Century?

Usually it's the leftmost plug on the front of engine. This is looking from the front of the car with the hood open. By front of engine I mean the side facing the grill, not the end with the pulleys.
You may want to check the motor mounts, it sounds like the engine is vibrating.
You might have crossed your plug wires. Double check from the distributor, which usually has the firing numbers stamped on it. This can harm your engine running it at high speeds.
